Is it possible to enjoy Halloween and take it easy on your teeth? Absolutely! By making a few smart choices and taking everything in moderation you and your family can lessen the impact that Halloween sweets have on your family’s smiles.

#1 Avoid Sticky, Opt for Chocolate

Sticky foods are worse on teeth because they can get stuck in cavity-prone areas. Whereas softer candy like chocolate simply melts away in a matter of minutes.

#2 Eat Candy Immediately After Meals (Not as a Snack)

One of the biggest factors that increases a child’s risk for tooth decay is the frequency of snacking or acid exposure. When sugars are consumed by natural bacteria living in our mouths the bacteria excrete an acidic byproduct for up to half an hour every time you eat them. Therefore, it’s best to reduce the number of exposures per day. In other words, eating meals and candy all at once is better than nibbling on treats here and there throughout the day.

#3 Sip on Plenty of Water

Water is a natural cleanser. If you know your child is going to be enjoying some extended snacking for a day or two, make sure they’re getting plenty of water. Drinking water won’t replace brushing or flossing, but it can significantly lower bacteria and acid levels inside their mouth. For best results, stick with tap water since it’s fluoridated and helps strengthen enamel.

#4 Trade-in or Donate Candy

Keep your eye out for organizations that allow you to donate candy to the troops, charitable organizations, or groups that actually “buy back” excess candy—making it easier to sweeten the deal when it comes to reducing your child’s sugar intake.
