Many parents are unsure of what to expect when anticipating their child’s first dental visit. We’d love to share some tips to help you prepare for your child’s first experience and build a lifetime of positive dental visits.

1. Start early.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association both recommend that children first see a dentist around age one, or within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth. If you’ve already passed this milestone, you can make a dental appointment any time!

2. Start with preventative visits.

The first time a one or two year old child comes to the office, it will be for a check-up with the doctor, and possibly a child-friendly paint-on fluoride treatment. If your child is older than three, their first visit will likely consist of a cleaning as well as the check-up and fluoride. These visits are a perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the dental office, as they are noninvasive and involve a lot of education.

3. Make it a family activity.

Older siblings can act as great role models for their younger siblings (provided they have had positive dental experiences), and we make an effort to schedule families together so that younger siblings can sit near and watch their older siblings. If this is your first child, consider taking him or her with you when you go to the dentist for a cleaning or a checkup. Kids love to imitate adults. So if they see you going to the dentist, they are more likely to accept it as something they should do too! Speak positively to your children about your own visits at the dentist.

4. Keep it positive.

DO: Create a countdown calendar to the next visit, whether it’s yours or your child’s. Show excitement!

DON’T use negative words. Read children’s books that explain teeth health and dentists in a positive way.

DO choose a pediatric dentist, who will have the right atmosphere and know the right words to put you and your child at ease.
