Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional braces. Invisalign is a tool used by orthodontists to straighten teeth using a custom-made series of aligners. These aligners are created for each individual and each individual stage of treatment based upon the unique structure of a patient’s teeth and jaws. Invisalign is designed to be invisible. The trays are made of smooth, clear multilayer plastic called SmartTrak and are worn over the teeth. They look and feel like a custom retainer or thin mouthguard and are worn 22-24 hours a day.Invisalign is easy to clean by removing and brushing/rinsing trays. Aligner trays need to be changed between every 7 to 14 days depending upon the complexity of movement occurring or stage of treatment a patient is experiencing.

One of the best traits of Invisalign treatment relates to how it fits into patient lifestyle. There are no emergencies and there are no dietary restrictions. There are no issues with food or difficulty eating as you can remove the aligners to eat. Removing them to eat can be a bit of a hassle as you cannot eat with them so impromptu eating becomes more difficult. Patients also have to remember to put them back in, whereas braces are always attached to the teeth and, therefore, are always working.

Aligners are changed so often, they rarely have time to discolor or stain. Cleaning your aligners is very simple as you just brush them a few times per day. It is advised not to soak them in colorful antimicrobial mouth rinses as that can stain them more quickly. Invisalign has a lot of very patient friendly characteristics but it isn’t a perfect solution for every patient.

Many of our patients have asked us about the plastics that are used to make the aligners. Invisalign aligners are made from medical grade polyurethane resin which equates to “clear plastic.” Aligners are biocompatible and will not interfere with your health. The plastic used does not contain BPA and is free of both Bisphenol-A and phthalate plasticizers. They are made of a long chain polymer plastic material and they are FDA approved, of course. Invisalign is the only aligner system that has customizable attachment compatibility for greater tooth movement control and multi-layer plastic for better force profiles for tooth movement. They are perfectly safe to use and a great way to achieve your perfect smile.

Our orthodontists can help you navigate a decision between traditional orthodontic treatment with braces and aligner treatment using Invisalign. We are greatly experienced with both treatment modalities and will be happy to discuss options at your next visit.

If you have any other questions about Invisalign, please inquire in our office. We would welcome the conversation.
