Choosing the right toothpaste for your child can be a challenge, especially with so many options available. From fruity flavors to characters on the packaging, it can be hard to know what to choose. Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Specialists of Michigan is here to help you navigate the world of toothpastes and find the right one for your child’s smile.

Make Sure it Has Fluoride

The most important thing to look for when choosing a toothpaste for your child is to pick one that contains fluoride. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Our pediatric dentists encourage you to look at the packaging and choosing a toothpaste that has the seal of the American Dental Association on it.  That way, you know it has all the right ingredients to keep your child’s teeth their healthiest.  Fluoride application to teeth is one of the largest public health accomplishments in the last 50 years as it has greatly lowered the rate of dental cavities in the population.

Experiment With Flavors to Find Their Favorite

Another factor to consider when choosing a toothpaste for your child is the flavor. Children often prefer toothpastes that have a fruity or sweet flavor.  Mint flavors are often too intense or “spicy” for little mouths.  So, experiment with different ones to find your child’s favorite. Some toothpastes even come with fun characters on the packaging, which can help associate toothbrushing with something your child loves.

Be Sure They’re Using it as Directed

It’s important to be sure your child is using the toothpaste as directed. For children under the age of 3, a rice-grain-sized amount of toothpaste is enough. For children over the age of 3, a pea-sized amount is just right. Have them brush twice a day for two minutes.  A good rule of thumb is that if your child can’t tie their own shoes yet, they still need help with toothbrushing!
