Warm weather necessitates the need for hydration and balanced nutrition to keep tiny bodies healthy all summer.

As long as they brush afterward, it’s fine for kids to have an ice cream treat once in a while. But there are plenty of other options between those indulgent moments. Here are a few simple snack alternatives for your kids that will not increase their risk of tooth decay while they’re out of school.

Fruit and Veggie Platters

Fresh foods that are very beneficial for teeth include celery, apples, carrots, and pears. These foods, when eaten sliced, are high in fiber and water, both of which help to reduce hazardous plaque buildup.

If your child isn’t a fan, consider adding a dip, such as hummus, peanut butter or ranch dressing, to help the healthy stuff a little more appealing.

Frozen Yogurt Pops

In the summer, sugary popsicles are a must-have. However, you want to save them for special occasions. Every time they eat them, your children are exposing their enamel to acid and sugar. These treats, like ice cream, should be considered a special treat that is offered once in a while instead of frequently.

For DIY frozen treats, freeze some yogurt with berries in a popsicle form.  It’s even simpler to place pre-made yogurt tubes in the freezer for a simple DIY yogurt popsicle. Your children will still enjoy a cool sweet treat, but with less sugar than ice cream. Yogurt’s dairy content is beneficial to teeth and can even delay the action of cavity-causing bacteria.

Whole Grain Crackers

Whole grains contain a complex structure that is difficult for cavity bacteria to break down. Plus, the fiber of whole grains is beneficial to your children’s digestive systems. Serve these crackers with healthy hummus, cream cheese, cheese or even salsa to spice things up.

Quick Rollups

Cold cuts are a simple and refreshing source of protein. Cheddar cheese slices can be included as cheese, like yogurt, complements your child’s favorite deli meat and can help prevent cavities.
