Babies are typically not born with teeth but rather erupt their first teeth between six months and one year of age. It is an exciting time and a new stage in your baby’s development. While these teeth are coming in, they literally make a little cut in the gums to pass through which can cause discomfort and swelling that our babies will perceive so we often refer to this time as “teething”.

Some babies may become a little fussy or irritable during this time. They may even have a harder time falling asleep. Many time babies also drool during teething. This is all normal. However, if you find your baby has a fever or diarrhea or seems extremely uncomfortable, it is a good idea to call your doctor. On the other hand, some babies may not be affected at all.

Sore or tender gums at the time of tooth eruption is a very common symptom. The teeth are cutting through the gums and this may become uncomfortable. A clean teething ring may be just the trick to help your baby feel more comfortable. You can also use a clean finger or wet gauze and gently rub your baby’s gums to help soothe them for about 2 minutes each time. The Food and Drug Administration does not recommend using teething gel to reduce pain, which can even numb your baby’s throat as well as gums and could cause difficulty swallowing. There are some over-the-counter pain relievers for baby, but we advise speaking with your doctor before you give any of these to your baby.

Dr. Mak reminds us that, “When the teeth do break through, this is when you will need to start brushing your child’s teeth. No toothpaste is usually needed or recommended until age 1, however.” Usually symptoms disappear after the tooth is through. This momentous occasion is also the right time for your child to have their first dental visit. This will begin the start of their regular dental checkups to be sure they have a healthy and beautiful smile and also feel very comfortable at the dentist! Our pediatric dentists are experts at making sure these early visits go smoothly and we’d love to help your children receive special care from the very beginning.
