A Waterpik or water flosser is a device that was created to clean any mouth tissue using a stream of water pressure. It is easy to use and can be purchased at drug stores or places like Target or Meijer. Many people are surprised to hear that a recent study1 found that a Waterpik was approximately 30% more effective at removing plaque and reducing inflammation in the gum tissue when compared with flossing.

There are many benefits to using a Waterpik as a substitute for flossing. While flossing is a basic procedure for many people, there are a variety of reasons why it may be difficult to accomplish for young patients or patients with dexterity issues. The pulsating action helps to get rid of bad bacteria that can lurk in the pockets of the gums and between the teeth. Studies have shown that using the waterpik helps to reduce gum bleeding and gingivitis. It actually gets deeper into the pocket than string floss and it can go under and around dental work and orthodontic appliances that would block simple access to floss.

It’s gentle around implants, and a Waterpik or flosser can also be one of the best ways to keep your mouth healthy and clean if you are wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances. Many children who use a Waterpik found it easier and more beneficial than the tedious and sometimes challenging job of flossing with string floss. Frankly, some orthodontic appliances like cemented-in expanders won’t even allow flossing to occur so a Waterpik might be the only approach.

Using a water flosser is quite easy. The objective is similar to string flossing, as the goal is to get in between every tooth and disrupt any food or bacteria that is hiding there. We recommend starting from the back teeth and working your way to the front. You basically shoot the stream of water directly between your teeth and at your gumline. Be sure to get the inside as well as the outside, and be sure to do between all your teeth. You will be surprised how clean and fresh your mouth feels afterward!

Dr. Ari believes that, “the best way to include the waterpik into your oral hygiene routine is to add it to your evening routine. That’s commonly the best time to do it because we aren’t in as much of a rush and it assures the mouth is cleanest before we go to bed when our mouths dry out and we are most susceptible to harmful bacteria.” These five minutes of your day will help to add to a lifetime of good health!
