So many of our parents ask us, “What can I do to prevent my child from getting cavities?” We love to answer this question! We want our patients to be cavity free, but we all know that this is not always the reality of what transpires, even with the best intentions. The good news is that there are simple measures you can take to prevent cavities.

ralstrom-pediatric-dentistOf course, avoiding sugary sweets while at the same time regularly brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist every six months top the list of ways to avoid cavities. Whenever we eat something that contains sugar or starch, the bacteria in our mouths “eats” what is left on our teeth and secrete acids as “waste” which eats away at the enamel (or hard outer surface) of our teeth. Some of the big offenders include bread, cookies, candy, soda, and juice. Most starches and sugar should be taken in moderation. Liquid sugars are, of course, the worst because they can go to the hardest to reach places.

Sometimes a white spot may appear on a tooth. This is a sign of early decay. Tooth decay can still be reversed at this point by brushing with toothpastes that contain fluoride, using fluoride mouth rinses, drinking water and avoiding sugary, acidic drinks, and being sure to have your teeth cleaned regularly by a professional who can get to plaque that regular brushing cannot remove. An improved routine, as described above, can lead to “remineralization” or self repair of tooth enamel. If the teeth are not maintained, the tooth decay process can continue, weakening, or destroying the enamel and forming a cavity.

Here are the best tips for your children to avoiding a cavity:

  • Save candy, cookies, and soda for special occasions if at all possible
  • Limit fruit juices and try to consume these with meals
  • Avoid eating anything after bedtime brushing
  • Brush at least twice a day with a toothpaste approved by your dentist
  • Supervise your child brushing when possible
  • Never miss a six month check up with your pediatric dentist

We hope these important reminders help to keep your child cavity free!
