We celebrate World Oral Health Day every year on March 20. Many people have used this date as a trigger for declaring an oral health pledge. What’s your pledge going to be? Maybe you can pledge to always go to the dentist every 6 months? Or pledge to floss every day!

It’s the largest campaign on oral health with dentists and patients making pledges from everywhere in the world.

What should you pledge for World Oral Health Day?

Promise to protect your oral health. This is important because a healthy mouth means a healthy body. Your mouth welcomes the food you eat into your body and the food you eat provides the energy and resources for optimal function of your organ and immune systems.

  • Pledge to brush twice every day and floss every day.
  • Pledge to change your toothbrush every three months. A tattered toothbrush can no longer do its job. So retire it and bring in a new recruit. Your child can have a note on his or her calendar for unwrapping and inaugurating a new toothbrush, with a ceremony under the tap and all. That would be fun!
  • Pledge to visit the dentist twice every year for a cleaning and check up.

Speaking of the food you eat, you can pledge to eat good food and make healthy choices. This helps you keep your teeth and bones healthy while the rest of your body also gets essential nutrients they need to function and protect your health.

For example, fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C give you strong gums and teeth, and also boosts your immunity and eye and skin health. Eating good food makes you look and feel good.

Here’s an smart pledge: Pledge to not eat snacks after you brush your teeth at night!

You’ll avoid extra calories right before your body rests at night and, unless you brush again, your will go to bed with food particles around your teeth that will feed the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth.

Maybe the final pledge idea would be to brush, floss, rinse and put in your retainers (if applicable) as the last thing you do before hitting the pillow.
