Tooth decay in infants is sometimes referred to as “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.” This is caused by sugars, even natural sugars, which cling to an infant’s teeth for a long period of time. These sugars can be found in fruit juices, milk, and even formula and breast milk. Tooth decay in infants can cause many problems for your child. These first teeth, although they are not permanent, are very important. Baby teeth are necessary for the heathy growth of second teeth, for speech development, to serve as space holders for future adult teeth, and for that beautiful smile you want your baby or toddler to have.

first-dental-visitOnce the decay occurs, it is almost impossible to reverse, so prevention is very important. The decay occurs because bacteria in the mouth thrives on sugar and creates acids that then attack the teeth. One important way to prevent this is to not allow your baby to fall asleep while eating and to avoid placing them in the crib with anything except water. This holds the liquid in their mouths and up against their teeth and gums. Instead, after feedings, wipe your infant’s gums with a clean washcloth. If your child has any teeth, brush them. As soon as their first tooth erupts, it is time to brush! You don’t need to use toothpaste, just a soft toothbrush. This is also when you should take your child to their first dental visit to make sure you have all the tools as a parent to properly care for your child’s smile and to begin acclimating your child with the dental office – a critical step in avoiding dental fear in your child. If your child has more than one tooth, you can even floss between those teeth and you should begin using a minimal smear of toothpaste around age 1. Ask your pediatric dentist about what kind of toothpaste to use.

Above all, avoid ever putting extra sugars in their bottle or dipping their pacifiers in sugar, honey, or syrup. This direct contact can lead to serious tooth decay, very quickly. If you have any other questions about this topic, please ask one of our pediatric dentists. We will be happy to assist you, as we believe that prevention is the most important key to your child’s excellent oral health.
